The apartment is located in a residential neighborhood, called 'Analipsi', on a hill in the southern part of the town of Rhodes. During the Ottoman (Turkish) period (1523-1912) this area was called 'Kizil Tepe' which means 'Red Hill' in Turkish, because of its distinct reddish coloured earth, giving the house its name. After the Second World War Rhodes experienced an economic boom thanks to the development of tourism and the town expanded in a southern direction. Many inhabitants of the older quarters, in and around the 'old town', left their old houses and moved into modern apartment buildings, the so called 'polykatikias'. The older parts of town became the domain of hotels, bars and tourists. This development has led to a clear distinction between the residential Greek parts of town and the touristic part.
