Situated between the huge bulk of Skiddaw and the gentle beauty of Derwent Water, Keswick has become a major centre for tourism in the northern Lake District. This pretty market town offers a wide range of attractions for visitors, from shops and restaurants to museums with a difference, and boating trips around lake Derwent Water.

Perhaps the most photographed pack horse bridge in the Lake District due to its location and stunning views. This extremely popular viewpoint looks out over Derwent Water with spectacular views over Bassenthwaite Lake and the River Derwent. Head to nearby Surprise View where you see how great ice sheets carved out this impressive landscape. You have an uninterrupted view across Derwent Water and onto the Solway and distant shores of Scotland.

Honister Pass forms part of a beautiful circular scenic drive from Keswick that includes Newlands Pass and Buttermere, areas that aren’t as dominated by visitors compared with other parts of the Lake District. The slate mine is at the top of the Pass in Borrowdale. Watch slate being riven (or split) using processes that have changed little over the past 300 years. Enjoy a guided tour into the mine detailing the history and spectacular features of mining life. Witness the current workings of how a mixture of modern and traditional methods are still extracting slate which was formed some 400 million years before Tyrannosaurus Rex roamed the land.

Moss Force is approximately 100 metres (328 ft) high, standing on Moss Beck which flows off the fell of Robinson. The Beck rises to a height of 540 metres, flowing across a boggy area known as Buttermere Moss before plunging down from a height of 420 metres in three distinct sections to form Moss Force. Moss Force waterfall is situated at Newlands Pass, between Newlands Valley and Buttermere Valley.

One of the most visually impressive prehistoric monuments in Britain and the most visited stone circle in Cumbria, on the level top of a low hill with views across to Skiddaw, Blencathra and Lonscale Fell. There are 38 stones in a circle approximately 30 metres in diameter. Within the ring is a rectangle of a further 10 standing stones. The tallest stone is 2.3 metres high. It is thought to have been built around 3000 BC (the beginning of the later Neolithic Period) and is one of the earliest stone circles in Britain. Although its origins are unknown it is believed it was used for ceremonial or religious purposes.
