Full day tour of the Isle of Man - Discover Manxland with your guide Nigel
Leaving Peel our first stop is St Johns where we visit the most famous part of the Island, the four-tiered Tynwald hill. This is the most distinctive landmark and a signal of the Isle of Man’s independence as a self-governing crown dependency we will also visit St Johns church were the members of the house of keys retire to after the Tynwald ceremonyNiarbyl Bay, is a secluded beauty spot just south of the Dalby Village on the rugged west coast. Nigel will explain the geology of the area and show you where you stand on two separate continents. The Old Thatched Manx Cottages on the beach were made famous in the film "Waking Ned Devin". Many other films have used this location. A beautiful peaceful spot to see the birds and spot the Mount of Mourne in Ireland.
We will stop at Castletown, the ancient capital of Mann here there will be time to visit Castle Rushen, a medieval castle originally built for the Norse king and later besieged by Robert the Bruce
Our next stop will be a journey back in time to see how crofters lived on the island at Cregneash. You may also see cats with no tails and our four-horned loaghtan Sheep!
Heading south next to the Sound, our mostly southerly point giving views over to the Calf of Mann and out to Ireland here we will stop for lunch.
From the Sound we drive up along the east coast, where we must say hello to the Fairies as we pass over the famous Fairy Bridge. We will drive through Douglas along the Victorian promenade on to Laxey.
The largest working waterwheel of its kind in the world is truly a sight to behold. This Victorian engineered beauty, the Lady Isabella, affectionately named after the wife of the Island's Lieutenant Governor of the time Charles Hope. The wheel was designed by Robert Casement in 1854 to pump water from the mine. Nigel will take you on a SHORT! visit to the mine shaft. You're welcome to brave the steps up to the top of the water wheel.
Time to stop on Laxey shore for an ice cream or light refreshement.
From Laxey we travel a short distant to one of the oldest villages on the Island. Kirk Maughold Church sites in the site of the first church / keeil building on the island in around 447 AD by Celtic St Maughold who was expelled from Ireland by St Patrick and landed on the coast here towards the end of the 5th century bringing Christianity with him. The church contains a large number of Celtic Crosses from the early Christian period 6th-13th Centuary. The grave yard contains several historic graves which Nigel will explain.
Coming down from Maughold we will drive through Royal Ramsey and join the TT course back to Peel
